Frances’ art holds nothing back. A self-taught artist and mother, a traumatic relationship destroyed her conceptions of a “perfect” relationship. To heal, she had to come to terms with how perfect facades can hide chaos and how we find sanctuary in the most disturbing of situations. Her work is bluntly powerful: an installation of domesticity slightly askew with the wear of lies; a pair of jeans marked by hundreds of cigarette burns. Her idea of romance shattered, Frances now believes in a grittier, but healthier, truth of how relationships founder and flourish. Javier is the classic romantic. A renaissance man, his grand, sweeping vision of life bridges his poetry, paintings and music. His art makes you believe in love. He celebrates romance; she says romance is nothing – it’s what lies beneath that is real. In art, complexity and depth is built upon a simple form by adding shadows to lightness. We created Fling because, as much as we enjoy a perfect love story, we wanted to also hear the real stories – of crashing and burning, of losing your way, and of being triumphant, because of – and in spite of – love. In finding Frances and Javier, we found a way to rage and heal.
