ABOUT FLING

Artists

Sara + Dennis

Sara Blaylock is a multimedia artist who has a hard time recalling her biography as she is very absorbed in her fantasy of the present and the future. In the future, she hopes her biography reads as follows: Sara Blaylock received her Bachelor in Fine Arts in media arts from the California College of the Arts in 2007. Upon completion, she continued with her fantasy pseudo-science in her video and digital imaging work. These works matures and earned Sara recognition and financial security – securing her lifelong desire to never have to work a 9-to-5 desk job. Sara holds an MFA from Stanford where she lectures and teaches with frequency and currently lives in a lovely home in Marin County with two chocolate labs and a supportive lifemate. Sara’s greatest achievement has been the advocacy she presented for public school art education programs. It is her intention to continue helping in the politics of arts education.

Dennis Somera uses text as “a seed for ideas needing manifestation in da world as performance through his body or better true collaboration with udders.”  A member of the Cornelius Cardew Choir, he has performed his spoken-word-play with a pinch/punch of performance art at Oakland and San Francisco Bay Area performance venues including the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Pusod, SOMArts, and the Oakland Asian Cultural Center.  He has been published in Tinfish, Chain and PomPom.

On their pairing:

We’re absolutely, 100% positive Sara and Dennis are either mad, or mad geniuses. Sara sent us an interactive video in which we get extreme close-ups of her lips mouthing breathless compliments. It’s the exact same video no matter which compliment you select.  It’s a very blunt condemnation of our culture’s polite superficiality, and, apparently, an ode to both Sara’s expertise at giving lip and our shallowness for enjoying it – we admit we were sucked in by the fake fawning. Dennis, too, is the master of subterfuge. Trained in jazz, sound improvisation, dance, and, yes, miming, Dennis is a spoken word and performance artist who is interested in pushing the limits of text, sound and body. Sara wants to play with the layers of social interaction and Dennis wrote he wanted to play with lawn blowers. Together, they will undoubtedly have a fling reinventing a chaotic, slightly madcap world where our understanding of how relationships work is turned on its head.
